Hinaki

eel/fish trap

Collection: Taonga Maaori

Overview

This traditional hinaki (eel/fish trap) would have been used by Maaori of the Raahui Pookeka Huntly area to catch tuna (eels) and other fish.
This hinaki was found in front of a former Maaori Pa in a swampy part of a drain near Rangiriri and Te Kauwhata.

Name: Hinaki
Production: Unknown weaver; possibly made before 1850.
Materials: Mangemange (native climbing fern).

Patu Aruhe

Collection: Taonga Maaori

Overview

Patu Aruhe would have been used by Maaori to pound the edible root of the rauaruhe (bracken fern). The fern would be dried, steeped in water, cooked and then pounded.
Pounding the root would separate the edible flesh from the fibres.
This patu aruhe was found by Wilfred Harrison on his property, near a stream along with other similar objects.

Overview

In order to create Raranga (flax weaving) Maaori would remove the outer green layer of the flax, then soak and pound the inner fibres with a Puta Muka until soft.
